Steam Activation or Chemical Activation?
Activation is the step that turns raw char into activated carbon, and industry has two main routes: physical activation with steam and chemical activation with acid. Both open pores, but the character of the pores they open — and hence the personality of the product — differs.
Steam activation: the work of high temperature
Carbonized feedstock meets water vapor at 900–1100°C. The steam strips away part of the carbon atoms through the water-gas reaction, leaving a clean, micropore-dominant network. By its nature the process leaves no chemical residue; washing needs are minimal.
Character: micropore-dominant, high-iodine carbons that easily qualify for food contact. It is the standard route for granular and pellet products, drinking water carbons and gas-phase grades. Our own production line works on this principle — see our process here.
Chemical activation: low temperature, wide pores
The feedstock — usually wood sawdust — is impregnated with phosphoric acid and processed at a comparatively low 400–600°C. The acid breaks up and swells the cellulose structure, producing a meso- and macropore-rich material. Washing out and recovering the acid is an integral part of the process.
Character: wide-pored carbons, strong in decolorization, typically in powdered form. It is the dominant method of the wood-based PAC world.

| Dominant pores | Micro | Meso + macro |
| Chemical residue risk | None | Depends on wash quality |
| Typical feedstock | Coconut, coal | Wood |
| Typical product | Granular, pellet | Powder |
| Strong application | Water, gas, gold | Decolorization |
What it means for the buyer
Data sheets rarely state the activation method, but the product character reveals it: high iodine + granular form points to steam; high methylene blue + powdered form points to chemical. For food and pharma applications, remember to request residue certification on chemically activated products.
