GAC vs PAC: Granular and Powdered Activated Carbon Compared

The first big decision in any activated carbon project is the form: granular or powdered? Both are made from the same material, yet their operating models are completely different. The wrong choice means either unnecessary capital expense or a constantly bleeding operating cost.

The core difference: continuous or batch?

GAC is an infrastructure investment: loaded into a filter column, it runs for months and is reactivated when saturated. PAC is a consumable: dosed into the process, it does its job and leaves the system with the sludge. So the first question is: is your contaminant load continuous or periodic?

Choose GAC if…

If your contaminant load is relatively stable, your flow is high and the plant will run for years, granular carbon is almost always more economical. Municipal drinking water plants, process water lines and gold recovery circuits are typical examples.

Choose PAC if…

If the problem is seasonal — like geosmin odor arriving each spring — or you produce in batches, investment-free flexibility lies with PAC. Decolorization in the sugar and beverage industry is PAC’s classic domain; find the details in our PAC guide.

The hybrid approach

Many modern plants use both: a GAC bed for the base load and a PAC dosing line for peak events. This setup extends GAC bed life while insuring against sudden episodes.
