Choosing Activated Carbon Mesh Size: A Practical Guide

Mesh number is the most misunderstood specification in the activated carbon world. Yet the logic is simple: it tells you which sieve the carbon passes through and which it stays on. 8x30 mesh means the particles pass sieve number 8 (below 2.36 mm) but stay on sieve number 30 (above 0.6 mm).

The core trade-off: speed or resistance?

As particles get smaller, two things happen at once:

  • Adsorption speeds up — the molecule’s path to the depth of the pore gets shorter
  • Pressure drop rises — water or gas must push through a denser bed

Mesh selection is the balance between these two curves. Since pump and fan energy is an operating expense, the balance point lands differently at every plant.

Quick selection table by application

MeshParticle rangeBest fit
4x82.4–4.8 mmDeep gas beds, vapor recovery
6x121.7–3.4 mmGold recovery (CIL/CIP), gas phase
8x300.6–2.4 mmMunicipal water treatment — the industry standard
12x400.4–1.7 mmDrinking water polishing, fast kinetics
20x500.3–0.85 mmCartridge filters, short contact time designs

Three practical notes from the field

  1. In backwashed filters, particle size must match the wash velocity; overly fine particles escape the bed during backwash.
  2. In gold circuits, coarse and hard particles (6x12) are preferred; carbon lost on screens is gold lost — details in our CIL/CIP article.
  3. Check the uniformity coefficient: within the same mesh range, a narrow distribution gives more predictable bed behavior.

Mesh gains meaning together with the other data sheet parameters; our spec reading guide is here. For non-standard mesh needs, our production line offers custom screening.
